Yuma Marine killed in San Diego rollover accident

A 24-year-old Yuma Marine died in a rollover accident in San Diego early Sunday morning.

Cpl. Pedro Conceicao was ejected from the vehicle he was riding in and pronounced dead at the scene. Conceicao had been stationed at Marines Corps Air Station Yuma.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver, Ashley L. Maya, 21, also a Yuma Marine, was intoxicated and traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred at 3:25 a.m.

Another ejected passenger, a 25-year-old woman from El Cajon, Calif., sustained major injuries. The third passenger, a 23-year-old man also from El Cajon, extricated himself from the car and sustained minor injuries.

The surviving passengers were all taken to area hospitals.

CHP said Maya appeared to have no visible injuries and did not complain of any pain. However, due to the severity of the collision, she was hospitalized for observation. She is expected to be charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated upon her release from the hospital.

Conceicao, from Fairfax, Va., was an aviation supply specialist attached to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13, Marine Aircraft Group 13, Third Marine Aircraft Wing. He joined the Marine Corps in 2008 and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010. His awards include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
