Witness sought in fatal collision

Yuma police are looking for more possible witnesses to a fatal collision Sunday at 8th Street and Avenue B.

According to Yuma police, at 5:11 p.m., 67-year-old John Esperanza of Yuma was riding his bike south on Avenue B when he entered the crosswalk at the intersection.

He was struck by a 2005 Nissan sedan driven by Irene Pollard, 61, of Yuma, who was westbound on 8th Street and making a left turn onto Avenue B.

Esperanza was treated on scene by the Yuma Fire Department and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center. He was later flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, where he died from his injuries.

The Yuma Police Department encourages any witnesses to the collision to call accident investigator Mary Zavala at 373-4700, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
