RC craft take flight Saturday
Remote-controlled airplanes, helicopters and jets of all sizes will take flight during the Yuma Aeromodelers Fly Yuma 2012 Model Airplane Air Show on Saturday.
Event organizers expect model airplanes, and their pilots, from all over Arizona and Southern California. Several static aircraft displays will be set up.
The show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a 36,000-square-foot runway near Yuma Proving Ground.
To get to the runway, drive east on Highway 95 toward YPG. Follow the curve past Avenue 11E and continue to Rifle Range Road. Take a right, and follow posted signs to the event.
Organizers ask spectators to donate $5 to park each vehicle. The proceeds will be used to maintain the airfield.
Food concessions will be offered by Boy Scout Troop 8053 of Yuma.
On Sunday, there will be a Fun Fly Contest and free hobby swap meet for RC owners at the same location.
Yuma Aeromodelers is a club of about 150 RC enthusiasts affiliated with the Academy of Model Aeronautics who promote and teach the building and flying of model aircraft. Many of the club members are winter visitors from all over the nation.
