Foothills burglary suspects in court

Two men allegedly responsible for a rash of burglaries in the South Foothills area this summer appeared in Yuma Justice Court Thursday.

Anthony Abril, 49, and Lee Shaw, 52, appeared before Judge Gregory Stewart. No victims were present as they are away for the summer.

Abril was charged with second-degree burglary, a Class 3 felony, for allegedly entering a residence off of East 51st Place with intent to commit theft. His bond was set at $35,000.

Shaw had been released from Yuma County Detention Center earlier this week after posting bail. By returning for his court date, the amount of his bond was not modified and remained at $25,000.

He also was charged with second-degree burglary, a Class 3 felony, for allegedly entering a residential structure off of East 51st Place with the intent to commit theft.

A third man involved in the case, 32-year-old Manuel Cota III, was arrested Saturday. He was released from jail Tuesday because the Yuma County Attorney's Office had not filed a complaint against him by that time, according to court records.

Abril and Shaw were arrested Monday after an investigation by the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.

On that day, deputies obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 13500 block of 51st Street and entered the home. During their search of the property, they allegedly discovered several items including jewelry, firearms and electronics linked to burglaries in the South Foothills area.

The men had allegedly been targeting the homes of winter visitors who have vacated the Yuma area during the hot summer months.

The investigation into the string of burglaries in the South Foothills area is ongoing. YCSO asks anyone with any information about the burglaries to call them at 783-4427, or 78-Crime to remain anonymous.
