Man shot, killed in downtown Yuma

Detectives with the Yuma Police Department are investigating the overnight murder of a man in a downtown parking lot. The name of the victim will not be released by YPD until next of kin and family is notified.

Sgt. Leanne Worthen, a YPD spokeswoman, said shortly before 1 a.m., officers responded to the lot at 38 W. 2nd St. in reference to a disturbance.

Upon their arrival, officers found an adult male who had been shot. He was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police did not say if he had been shot more than once or how many shots had been fired.

During the investigation Friday, Madison Avenue was closed between 1st Street and 2nd Street. Throughout the day, YPD detectives contacted several people involved in the disturbance and processed the crime scene in the parking lot on the north side of a downtoen bar. The area remained closed until Friday evening.

After numerous interviews and the gathering of evidence, all of the people contacted by police in connection with the murder were released pending further investigation.

Investigators believe they have contacted all of the parties involved but are seeking any additional witnesses to the incident.

YPD asks anyone with information about this case to call Sgt. Rodriguez at 373-4678, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
