$86,000 to various Yuma charities

The Yuma Community Foundation has awarded more than $86,000 to several local nonprofits for various health, arts and culture, youth and other projects.

Thirty-three nonprofit organizations will receive grants for 36 projects totaling $86,100. The projects are as diverse as cancer screening, food and school uniforms for underprivileged children, and independent living opportunities for people with disabilities. The total amount requested during the grant cycle was close to $202,000.

The Sturges Charitable Trust once again gave substantially, contributing $55,000 to the pot. The YCF announced the winners at the Oct. 30 Heart of Yuma recognition event.

The awards were:

• ACHIEVE Human Services: Employment services job opportunities, $3,000

• Arizona's Children Association-Western Region: In My Shoes, $3,000

• Arizona Classical Ballet Performing Company-Yuma: “Literature in Motion,” $4,000

• Arizona Western College Foundation: Gadsden math concurrent enrollment, $1,000

• Assistance League of Yuma: New school uniforms for disadvantaged children, $3,000

• Ballet Yuma: Ballet Bound, $2,750

• Boy Scouts of America, Grand Canyon Council, Inc.: Scouting and soccer, $2,000

• Comite De Bien Estar, Inc.: San Luis youth cultural programs, $2,000

• Crossroads Mission: Arts and culture to combat addiction, $2,000

• Crossroads Mission: Adult education/GED testing, $2,500

• Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center: Mileage Club school program, $3,000

• Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona: Healthy lifestyles initiative, $2,000

• Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona: Imagine STEM, $2,000

• Greater Foothills Helping Hands: Access for independent living, $2,500

• Housing Authority of the City of Yuma: The SHINE Program, $1,000

• Humane Society of Yuma: Summer intern program, $3,600

• KIDS CuddleKit Closet: Middle school CuddleKit program, $1,000

• Planned Parenthood: Cancer screening program, $1,000

• Safe Kids Yuma County: Safe Kids' Project KISS (Kids In Safety Seats), $3,000

• Saguaro Foundation Community Living Programs: Snoezelen Outgo, $3,000

• Salvation Army/Boys and Girls Club of Yuma: New flooring, $1,750

• San Luis Corporation for the Arts and Humanities: Barrier2Bridge Conference 2013, $2,000

• SMILE: Independent living skills training, various disabilities, $2,500

• Sun Sounds Foundation: Sun Sounds radio reading program for the blind/disabled in Yuma, $2,500

• The Freedom Library: “An Evening with Ben,” $2,500

• The Healing Journey: Pre-teen and teen survivors of abuse empowerment program, $3,000

• United Way of Yuma County: Yuma County Anti-Drug Coalition, $1,000

• United Way of Yuma County: Imagination Library, $1,000

• Yuma Community Food Bank: Rural backpack program, $5,000

• Yuma Conservation Garden: How Does Your Garden Grow?, $2,500

• Yuma County Library District: Authors Across America: Phase IV South Yuma County, $2,500

• Yuma Family YMCA: Y family and community education program, $2,500

• Yuma Fine Arts Association: Yuma Fine Arts Association 50th anniversary celebration, $3,000

• Yuma Neighborhood Development Organization: Rentals, $3,000

• Yuma Orchestra Association: Collaboration concerts with the Yuma Ecumenical Choir and the Yuma County Music Educators, $3,000
