Clarification: Origin of letter to HSOY
A front-page article in Tuesday’s Yuma Sun referred to a letter the Humane Society of Yuma reported it had received from the city of Yuma regarding a change in procedure for private citizens taking stray animals to the shelter. At that time, a city spokesman said he could find no record of the letter being sent.
The Yuma Sun has since learned that the letter was written by Yuma Police Chief John Lekan, dated Jan. 11. The letter states that the city "will no longer assume responsibility for animals dropped off directly at HSOY by private citizens."
Instead, the city urges residents to report strays by calling the city’s animal control division at 783-4421.
