The Week Ahead - 5-12-08

The following items are included in The Week Ahead for May 12, 2008: "Beaty and the Geek"; Celebrity Waiters Dinner; YHS presenting "Night of January 16"; Celebration of String; and Desert Band Festival.

'Beauty and the Geek'

Starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Amanda Corey, star of "the Beauty and the Geek" reality show, will be at Sharky's Lounge, Paradise Casinos, in celebration of the ending of the show's fifth season. One of the finalist couples will also be present. The show is open to the public at no charge. Must be 21 to attend.

Celebrity Waiters Dinner

Different "celebrities" of Yuma will be serving (spoof-style) a dinner at the Yuma Golf and Country Club, 3150 S. Fortuna Ave. Festivities start at 5:30 p.m. to include entertainment by Hui O'Hawaii and a live auction. Volunteer Laurie Houston will be recognized. For early tickets, and reservations, contact Annie Fisher at 726-5500. Tickets are $480 for tables of eight; $60 single or $75 at the door. Proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for research in Arizona.

YHS drama

Yuma High School's production and performance class will present a drama at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Snider Auditorium, 400 S. 6th Ave. Production is "Night of January 16," based on a play by Ayn Rand. It's about two women facing charges for murdering a man with whom each had affairs. Admission is $5 per adult, $4 per student with identification, free for younger than 7.

Celebration of String

At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Yuma Historic Theatre, 254 S. Main St., will be the site of a concert by an orchestra made up of students from all over Yuma County. Kathy Younkers of Arizona Western College with the Yuma Community Orchestra is conductor, assisted by Walter Temme and Kevin Bishop, directors. Admission is free, donations appreciated.

Desert Band Festival

Intermediate and beginning band students of Yuma County schools will give concerts at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Post Auditorium, 400 W. 5th St. Sponsored by Yuma County Music Educators Association, the concerts are free.
