NAU-Yuma gets first assistant dean

  For the first time, Northern Arizona University's Yuma campus has an assistant dean.

  Llewelyn Young Jr., named to the post on Sept. 10, is responsible for the daily operations of academic services which encompass advising and scheduling of classes. Young will also direct administrative support services for NAU-Yuma and perform as a liaison to the school's community college partners, Arizona Western College and Imperial Valley College.

  "I am very excited about my new position,"Young said in an e-mail message. "NAU-Yuma is a great institution with a highly dedicated group of faculty and staff. Together we want to serve our students with the highest quality education possible. I'm looking forward to strengthening our excellent partnership with Arizona Western College and the Yuma community."

  Before his appointment, Young was NAU-Yuma coordinator of student services where he was responsible for student recruitment, activities, applications, registration and the office of financial aid.

  Graduating from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Young holds a bachelor's as well as a master's in education and his doctorate in education which he received from University of Hawaii at Manoa.

 

  Before arriving in Yuma, Young was a faculty member of the University of Hawaii and taught courses in research methods, community college leadership and higher education policy.

  He also conducts research on multicultural leadership, diversity in higher education and student retention issues.

 In addition, he works as a consultant on student services, institutional research and strategic planning and assessment.
