open to the public
The public is invited to Toastmasters International's annual Area 2 Table Topics and Humorous Speech Contest at 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St.
Toastmasters from clubs in Yuma and El Centro will take part in impromptu and comically entertaining speech competitions in the event, which is free to the public.
Winners will advance to the Toastmasters International Eastern Division Contest in November in San Diego.
Toastmasters International is an educational organization devoted to communication and leadership development.

Haunted Hotel Lee
is program topic Wednesday
"The Hotel Lee: History and Goats" will be the topic of a program Wednesday at the Heritage Branch Library, 350 S. 3rd Ave.
Patrick Sullivan, manager of the hotel, will present the 7 p.m. program that is open to the public.
Library patrons needing special accommodations are asked to contact the library, 782-1871, at least 72 hours in advance.

Gang activity explained
Yuma County Sheriff's Capt. Mark Martinez will discuss gang activity Oct. 16 in a public program at the Heritage Branch Library, 350 3rd Ave.
In the program that begins at 6 p.m., he will talk about what gangs are active in the Yuma area, their history and their criminal activities. A question-and-answer period will follow.
