Tortilla buy falls far short of a baker's dozen

We’ve all heard of a baker’s dozen. That’s when the generous people who make the baked goods throw in an extra one and give you 13.

But have you heard of the tortillera’s docena? It’s the opposite of the baker’s dozen. Instead of giving you one extra, the tortilla makers take two away.

Last week I bought what I thought was a bag of a dozen flour tortillas at a local grocery store. Boy, was I surprised when I got home and discovered that it contained only 10 tortillas. What happened to the other two? I looked at the bag again and it says in clear, big type, "10 count."

When did this tortilla-skimping trend start? Is it part of the food companies’ strategy to give us less product for more money – as in big bags of potato chips that are half air?

This clearly is a case where the adage "less is more" doesn’t work. Give me mas! And give me mas masa – at least two more tortillas worth of it!
