Homosexuals not bad Americans
Comments 0 | Recommend 0It is easy to become angry when reading Michael G. Warren’s letter in the Aug. 11 issue of The Sun. After all, he calls me a bad American, weak and corrupt. He claims that morality, liberty, freedom and goodness need to be defended, presumably against me.
Why does he make these claims? Because, I am a lesbian. As a woman who is married (in California) to and in love with another woman, I am the cause of all of his angst. Well, after a few deep breaths and a little focusing of my mind, the anger recedes.
There are several flaws to Warren’s argument. Many have been said before, but a few bear repeating.
First, even among the "Christian" religions there are varying levels of acceptance of homosexual members. Not all Americans are Christians. And not all religions consider homosexuality a "sin." I take my spirituality seriously. I do believe in God and believe that I was created as He desired - including my sexuality. However, I am not a Christian and the definition of homosexuality as a "sin" is not a part of my beliefs. Does this make me any less moral? Perhaps, in Warren’s opinion, it does, but not in mine.
Second, what is this hang up with homosexuality anyway? Why isn’t Warren writing letters rallying people against murder, stealing, adultery or lying? These are all part of the Ten Commandments. So, again, why not pick one of the daily examples of these sins to rally against?
Third, I work hard, I pay my taxes and I obey the laws. I am a good American. I work together with my wife and her ex-husband to raise my step-children. We are loving and nurturing to them. We are teaching them to be responsible citizens.
How am I weak and corrupt? Is it because I believe differently than he does? How does my existence impinge upon his liberty, freedom and goodness? How do I prevent him from living his life as he sees fit? How do I stop his pursuit of happiness? I do not.
I exist. I am not going away. It is time for Warren, and people who believe similarly, to get over it.
