Better ways to do recycling
Recycling is important, but I doubt the wisdom of giving up a scheduled weekly trash pickup for a recycling day. Such an effort appears to be a waste for several reasons.
Firstly, most households accumulate far more rubbish than recyclable materials. Secondly, there are several groups who depend, at least in part, on recyclable material to do their good works. (Habitat for Humanity's aluminum cans comes to mind.)
We could, in my opinion, do a better job, at less expense, by establishing several drop-off locations with containers for cans, paper, cardboard, etc. where we can quickly deliver our bags. It would be better than employees in city trucks driving all over town and far better than putting out an extra (expensive) container at every house thus “cluttering” our homes and neighborhoods.
Recycling is a great idea but we can do it better than this.
