City has good alternative for tree disposal

Now that Christmas is over, thoughts begin to turn to not only the coming new year, but also to what to do with that Christmas tree in the living room that is shedding pine needles.

It is fun in the days leading up to Christmas to select a tree and decorate it. It is less fun getting rid of that tree.

Some city residents cut it up and stuff it in their trash cans. It works, but we think the city of Yuma offers a better alternative that is worth considering.

For some years now, the city has been providing people a way to bring their natural Christmas trees (not the artificial ones) in to be recycled. The trees can be brought to the city's North Public Works Yard at 265 W. 13th St. Thursday and Friday this week and Monday and Wednesday through Friday next week. The hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A lot of people think recycling is a worthwhile thing on its own, but there are also some very practical reasons to take advantage of this opportunity.

First, your tree doesn't fill up your trash can, leaving room for your other trash.

Second, the trees are going to be used for a good purpose. They will be chipped up and used as mulch in city parks. That saves the city — and ultimately taxpayers — some money.

Third, it avoids the expense of sending the trees to the landfill and keeps the landfill from filling up as fast as it might.

Fourth, it makes you feel good to have found a useful purpose for the dead tree.

All in all, it is a real win-win situation. We are glad the city continues to do this program each year.
