Safer drivers? Doesn't look like it

There is a commercial on television in which they say drivers today are paying more attention, texting and talking less on their cell phones, braking for animals and such, and so on and so on.

I can only wonder where they came up with this hogwash. I mean, it's one thing to put a positive spin on something, but it's another to be totally out of touch with reality.

Case in point. Yesterday as I approached a traffic light, a car coming in the opposite direction, in the left-turn lane, started to veer into my lane. I thought the driver was temporarily distracted and would correct the error. But the car kept coming and instead of risking a near head-on collision, I veered into the other lane.

As I passed the oncoming car, I could not see the driver's face, because it was buried in a cell phone. The driver never looked up or knew what almost happened.

So don't tell me about how much better we're going on the highways and byways.
