Some frustrations as an educator
As a longtime educator in this community, I have a few frustrations.
First are generalizations. When a parent is unhappy about something at school, instead of going to the source, they go to the media and generalize that the problem exists at all locations.
I take offense to the recent generalizations about special education in Yuma Elementary School District 1. I have taught special education for this district for over 20 years and have many successful students and many happy parents!
Second, we wonder why we have such issues disciplining our youths. Look at the parents. When they don't get what they want, they throw a tantrum. These tantrums are usually plastered on the front page of the local newspaper!
They generalize, threaten lawsuits or write complaints to the State Department of Education. I am all for advocating for your child, but demanding is different.
Third, shame on the local newspaper. The paper is quick to provide front-page space for criticism but let's share the wealth. At how many of the last positive school events that you were asked to cover were you a no show?
More food for thought, I am tired of hearing how educators choose this career for the love of the children and shouldn't complain because we have so much vacation time.
I happened across an old pay stub (2005) and compared it to a current one. I was making more money then! With over 20 years' experience and a master's degree, my pay is declining!
