The weather ate my homework
Excuses. We always hear excuses, and I’ve heard some pretty good ones in my day, especially about homework.
As a child, I had many excuses for not doing my homework. I was busy (playing Barbies), or building a treehouse, or, more often than not, reading a book.
School children in Yuma might have a more creative excuse this week -- the weather ate my homework -- and it might actually be true.
As I was walking my daughter to preschool today, I came across a water-logged notebook of ruled paper. The neighborhood kids hadn’t left for school yet, so I left it on the ground, thinking they would retrieve it. As I came back from the preschool, though, it was still on the ground, so I grabbed it up, hoping for some identifying name. Nothing was written inside. A few houses down though, I did find someone’s math homework, a rain-splattered page of neatly hand-written sums and an illegible name on the top.
So, teachers, if some creative student in the O.C. Johnson district told you the weather ate their math homework, drop me a note. I can swear they weren’t lying.
