Funerals are support for the living
In the last year, we've lost three people in our lives.
One was quite sudden and unexpected, while another was a graceful departure after a wonderful 96 years.
The third lost a battle against cancer that had spanned many years.
I've been fortunate. I haven't had to attend many funerals — two grandfathers, and my friend Mikey Leroux when we were in sixth grade.
But this last year was a reminder to me that funerals aren't only about those we've lost. Yes, we're there to remember those we love and to share stories and say our goodbyes. In many aspects, it's a celebration of life just as much as a farewell.
At the heart of it all, though, funerals are about supporting those who are still here, for those spur-of-the-moment hugs and helping wherever possible.
To me, the support we provide each other is the most vital — and treasured — part of the process.
