Better uses for band donations
In response to Joe Montoya’s letter to the editor ("There’s still time to aid school band"), I have several comments.
I would agree with him that the Gadsden school band members, teachers and parents should be commended for their hard work and success. I believe they would proudly represent the state and country at this event.
I wonder, however, if spending $300,000 to attend this event is the best use of valuable dollars at a time when we rank near the bottom among states in education and rank near the top for unemployment.
I think if we have funds to donate, they would be better spent towards an academic success program, tutoring and teacher incentive bonuses to stimulate learning and academic achievement.
I think we are putting luxury before necessity.
