Presidential views of history for just one buck

You never know what you'll find while browsing for nothing in particular. While at the Yuma Main Library, I dropped by the used bookstore run by the Friends of Yuma County Libraries.

I happened upon “Counsel to the President” by Clark Clifford, who advised Presidents Truman, Kennedy, Johnson and Carter. Later on, Clark would be implicated in a banking scandal. But as a presidential adviser, he witnessed or had a hand in key moments in history: Israeli statehood, creation of the CIA, Truman's upset victory in 1948, Cuban missile crisis and U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

He recounted those events in a book that sold for $25 when published in 1991. I got the 700-page, hardbound book for one buck.

That's one of many bargains I've gotten from the Friends of the Libraries, at library branches in Yuma and the Foothills. You might want to check them out.

And proceeds from book sales go toward library programs.
