Take honest look at traditional marriage

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

If we were to take a really honest look at the terrible unhappiness, spiritual poverty, and yes, violence behind the mask of conventional (i.e., heterosexual) marriages, and then compare that across the board with what letter writer Jim Rickabaugh ("Promotion of gay lifestyle harmful," April 7) refers to as the "homosexual lifestyle," I wonder which would come off better.

One thing is clear though, until Rickabaugh undertakes this comparison in the privacy of his own heart he will never be an adequate judge of what is or what is not "abnormal behavior."

On the other hand, while both his intention and his logic may seem misdirected, being aimed not at himself but certain of his neighbors, if we were to use that same logic upon conventional marriage, it is certain that fewer young people would rush into it.

Consequently, aside from his willingness to take his understanding of himself and the world from what he hears on "the radio," and the implied nastiness in his reduction of relationships to sexuality, I'm not sure that Rickabaugh's letter has much to recommend it.

I am continually astonished at how often, and how transparently, pulpit Christianity comes masked as self-righteousness.

Let's take the plank out of our own eye before presuming that our lives are the measure and therefore worthy of emulation.
