Mango addiction no laughing matter at customs port
Reading about the woman who was fined for trying to sneak duck eggs through the San Luis Port of Entry reminded me of my mom's accidental smuggling attempt.
She once almost inadvertently smuggled a mango through the Nogales port. Actually, she didn't intend to do it. She had bought one to eat before crossing (she loves those things!) and then forgot about it.
When the customs agent asked if she had anything to declare, she remembered the mango. She got flustered and said she had lemons (when she didn't!). They searched her things and found the incriminating mango.
They kept looking for the elusive lemons and finally believed her when she said she had misspoken. They laughed at her, confiscated the mango and let her through.
I don't know if mangoes and lemons are still prohibited, but I guess some things have changed. Somehow I think the agents wouldn't just laugh it off nowadays.
