Scribblers unite after pen pal relationship
Meeting up with a childhood friend always amounts to a fun experience, but it’s especially sweet when you’ve never actually met.
Last weekend in Tucson, my friend Jay and I went for lunch - and met for the first time.
That meeting began unfolding months ago when Jay, who lives in Tucson, asked a mutual friend here about posts we had exchanged on Facebook. He asked if I was the same Darin Fenger who had grown up in South Dakota, possibly the same Darin he had been pen pals with as a kid growing up in Louisanna.
At age 40, Jay and I “reunited” so many years after one of us scribbled the other’s address on an envelope and sent the last letter between us.
We really enjoyed our time together, especially after we stopped looking for the kids we used to be and started getting to know the new friends we’ve become.
