Early literacy learning starts at home

Kudos to Channel 8, the PBS affiliate in Arizona, and Somerton Library and Yuma Civic Center for partnering to put on a series of family literacy workshops for parents of children 5 and under.

The workshops show parents how to instill of love of reading in their youngsters, who then will have a head start when they reach elementary school.

I know we have teachers to teach children to read, but that task can't all be left up to schools. The lessons children learn in the classroom need to be reinforced by parents making sure they're reading at home too.

The workshops are held 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 29, and Dec. 6, 13 and 20 at the library, and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 and 29 and Dec. 4, 6 and 11 at the civic center.

They're free. For more information, call 1-855-818-6613.
