More people have cell phones than toilets
In the very sad but true category, last week the U.N. issued this surprising statistic from a recent study; more people have access to cell phones than toilets in the world today. That’s astounding. There are about 7 billion people on Earth, and 6 billion have access to cell phones, while only 4.5 billion have access to working toilets. About one-third of India’s population doesn’t have basic sanitation, making up 60 percent of those who don’t have access to toilets. That’s why Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation has launched a "Reinvent the Toilet" campaign, offering $42 million to researchers to come up with a new toilet, hoping to reduce the number of children who die due to poor sanitation with a toilet that is safe, uses less water and is easy to install. There are many days when I’d be happy to throw my cell phone into a toilet, but I guess I’d better be thankful to have both.
