Tax refund: Splurge or save?
I'm still giddy about getting a tax refund. As a single woman, I always paid more at the end of the year. I used the easiest of the EZ forms and never bothered with credits.
My father-in-law, a tax accountant, introduced me to the joys of getting a refund. Just getting married helped, but actually taking credits we qualify for made all the difference.
Now, as we wait for our refund, my husband and I keep throwing out ideas. Should we splurge and treat ourselves? But how could we, when we're renovating the house and have bills to pay?
According to Bankrate.com, 54 percent of Americans expect a tax refund; 24 percent owe money.
Of those who expect a refund, 7 percent plan to splurge on something fun, like a vacation. Thirty percent intend to pay down debt, 28 percent will save or invest it; 26 percent will use it for necessities.
How will you spend your refund?
