Man's pregnancy test joke becomes a serious matter
I've read plenty about the pregnant man. But did you hear about the man who found out he had cancer after taking a pregnancy test?
Acting on a silly whim, he reportedly took a home pregnancy test and was amused when he tested positive. A friend posted the results online, and the silliness quickly turned into concern after readers warned that testicular cancer produces the same hormone in men that pregnancy does in women. The man saw a doctor and discovered that he did, indeed, have the cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, it's true pregnancy tests can detect some types of testicular cancer in men, as well as pancreas, lung, stomach or other cancers that produce high levels of HCG in both men and women.
But doctors don't recommend using pregnancy tests as screening tools as they can result in false-positives and a lot of unnecessary worry.
However, I'm in awe with how the online community was able to alert this man to his condition.
