Sports writers come and go over the years
Tuesday I took a mugshot of our newest sports writer, Matt Carstens.
As I was walking back to my work station to process the photo, I wondered how many sports writers I've seen come and go here at the Yuma Sun.
Considering I recently marked my 30th anniversary (the second time around), I've lost count of how many names have come and gone in the sports department. That is not a testimonial to the working conditions, but rather an indication of what the Yuma Sun is known for: being a stepping-stone for young journalists just out of college, looking for their first job.
I was in much the same boat when I came on board in 1976, although I had worked a year as a police and city government writer. But this was my first gig as a sports writer.
It was a rewarding experience, and I hope it's the same for Matt before he is recruited away by another newspaper.
