Two reasons to reject arena
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Well, I can see which way the winds are blowing in Yuma, and I didn't have to call the weather bureau either. As Election Day draws nearer, the campaign to keep the public "well informed" on the proposed arena has really intensified.
There have been at least three good-sized articles on the arena in The Sun (front page, too!) extolling the virtues and the advantages, and how badly we need that arena to survive!
I have noticed an increase in the letters to the editor (mostly from real estate and construction businesses ) in favor of the arena. That's understandable, of course, since they would reap the obvious benefits.
Well, I would like to repeat a couple of points that I stated in my previous letters on the subject, then I will say no more and let the voters decide on Nov. 4. First, it's not the arena most of us object to, per se, but the way it's being bulldozed through by the city and Global Entertainment which has a poor record of their past endeavors in other cities. Yet the city fathers insist on giving them free rein which will cost Global not one cent.
Second, for the folks who are bemoaning the fact that the kids have nothing to do in Yuma, the arena is not the answer, as you will discover, if it is built. The majority will not be able to afford the price of a ticket to the events and neither will the parents!
So, before you vote for the arena, examine all the facts and think twice about a project that has been described as a "white elephant" and a future burden on the taxpayers of Yuma.
