Noah's Ark – history or myth?

The comment of a modern-day Noah who built and displayed a quarter scale replica of the ark in Yuma this week got me thinking. Dave Smith of Vancouver, Canada, noted some people consider the Biblical story of a great flood to be a fable. But could it have any truth to it?

I did some research and turned up some interesting facts. While most fables are vague (“Once upon a time ...”), the Biblical account is very specific, indicating the day, month and year the flood started, when and where the ark landed and when the waters dried up. It also precisely details the shape, measurements and materials used.

It's not very hard for me to picture the entire world covered in water. Think of recent world events: tsunamis, storms surges and melting glaciers. Already about 70 percent of the globe is underwater.

And interestingly enough, just about every culture across the planet has some sort of world flood legend. Coincidence?
