Donation of wreaths a wonderful surprise
On Dec. 16, a ceremony was held at Desert Lawn Memorial Park. The purpose was to honor our military veterans and their families who made major sacrifices or even gave their lives to protect our freedoms. This is an event that occurs simultaneously in 750 participating locations located in all 50 states and some locations overseas. It was estimated that over 400,000 wreaths were placed by 150,000 volunteers last Sunday. This has been a part of the holiday season celebration for over 20 years.
The local squadron of the Civil Air Patrol coordinates this ceremony and ordered seven wreaths for it. Imagine our surprise when 160 wreaths were delivered. Must be some mistake. It wasn't. One or more of the citizens of Yuma had ordered 153 wreaths at a cost of $15 each. They preferred to remain anonymous and we could not find out who had donated them.
The purpose of this letter is to make Yumans aware of the fact that we have such generous people living in our midst. We'd also like to thank the members of the American Legion, Veteran Submariners and others who helped make the event such a success.
Happy New Year, and may God bless America!
