Young Marines do fundraisers

I would like to recognize a local organization, the Yuma Young Marines. This organization provides children from 8-18 years of age exposure to leadership opportunities, community service and other life skills.

They are sponsored by The Marine Corps League and were adopted by Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, the Green Knights of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. Thank you for your sponsorship. The children are truly grateful.

There are several active duty Marines from all over the air station who volunteer their time providing training, support and mentorship to the kids. I would like to thank them, the retired volunteers, parents and others that make this program a success.

Recently the Young Marines have been involved in many community activities. First off, at the end of October the Young Marines volunteered at the American Legion by helping with the set up for the day's events for their annual Halloween Party, and providing entertainment and candy distribution to the children of the community.

Then in November there was a car wash for a young woman in our community, Carmen Navarro of Yuma, who is in need of a heart and kidney transplant. The Young Marines decided to volunteer their time and raise money conducting a car wash. They did this with the support of Wal-Mart in the Foothills. Thank you Wal-Mart. They raised a little over $300 in her honor. We hope the funds help her get the treatment she needs.

Another car wash and yard sale combo was done with the help from SA Recycling. They helped fund some of the unit's costs for a trip to Phoenix for a regimental drill competition. This will be an opportunity for the Young Marines to show off their marching skills and discipline while meeting other Arizona Young Marine units. Thank you SA Recycling.

As expected, they also marched in the Veteran's Day Parade showing their support, appreciation and gratitude to our veterans. Thank you to all the veterans and active military for giving your life and time to our great nation.

The last activity for November was the Annual Christmas Tower Lighting Ceremony. They assisted the Caballeros de Yuma with beverage distribution.

The Young Marines enjoy supporting our community. While doing so, the kids are learning respect, discipline and dedication to our community.
