Residents were allowed back in evacuated areas near Colorado Springs, Colo. where a raging wildfire forced tens of thousands to flee and destroyed an estimated 346 homes, making it the most destructive fire in the state's history. President Barack Obama toured fire-stricken areas Friday as hundreds of locals and some tourists who were staying at Red Cross shelters hoped life would return to normal. Other areas of the west have also been hit with wildfires. (ASSOCIATED PRESS)

Colorado has endured nearly a week of 100-plus-degree days and low humidity, sapping moisture from timber and grass, creating a devastating formula for volatile wildfires across the state and punishing conditions for firefighters.
