Building a Snow Slide in the Desert
8 of 8
It will take 160 tons of ice to build and maintain a "snow" slide at the 2012 Centennial Christmas Village. The ice is hauled to Yuma from an ice plant in Indio, California by the CV Ice Company. The ice comes in 300 pound blocks and are chipped down into "snow" by a large crushing machine.
Lionel Castro (from left), Braulio Perez, and Jesus “Carlos†Regalado chisel out the slides with shovels.
