Matador volleyball to host Chandler-Gilbert
Chandler-Gilbert at (9) Arizona Western
Time: 7 p.m. today, The House
Last game: Matadors beat Eastern Arizona 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21; Coyotes lost to Central Arizona 25-18, 27-25, 25-18
Records: AWC (8-2 overall, 4-1 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference); Chandler-Gilbert: (2-7 overall, 2-3 ACCAC)
Players to watch: Freshman Marisha Herbert continues to have a strong season for the Matadors, recording a season-high 18 kills in their win over Eastern Arizona. Herbert, from Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, has already been named the ACCAC Player of the Week this season. ... Freshman outside hitter Megan Hunt has led the offense for the Coyotes and is the team leader in kills (53) and attacks (153).
The lowdown: The Matadors have continued to have a fast start to the 2012 season. They're in first place in Division I and are starting to take shape as the team to beat in the conference. Now ranked in the NJCAA Top Ten, the Matadors should be able to beat the Coyotes if they play well and if they do, it will give Arizona Western coach Jason Davis a winning record against Chandler-Gilbert.
