Men's Soccer Preview: AWC at Chandler-Gilber
Match starts: 6 p.m. today.
Last game: AWC lost 4-2 at No. 7 Pima on Wednesday. The Coyotes beat Mesa 8-1.
Records: AWC (5-3-1 overall, 5-3-1 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference); Chandler-Gilbert (4-3, 4-3 ACCAC)
Player to watch: Jose Mora took over the goalkeeper position and did not allow a goal in the second half against the Aztecs. ... Andrew Hoffman was the Coyotes' leading goal scorer with five prior to the team's 8-goal outburst Wednesday.
AWC coach Kenny Dale's comments: "We've always had competitive games with Chandler, and we get Wally (Vasquez) back, so that can only help. We've had a lot of players injured early in the year and others have just not had their chance yet, but now some have. Walter Sanchez is not fully fit yet but he played well at Pima, and so anytime things don't go well you look at other guys, and guys are stepping up."
The lowdown: A game between two teams bunched in the middle of the ACCAC, AWC and Chandler could both need this win come November. The two teams beat each other on the road last year. AWC's other goalkeepr Santiago Ruiz (wisdom teeth) will not make the trip to today's game. Hoffman is the only Coyotes on the ACCAC scoring leaders list, while the Matadors have four (Abdel Becerra, Vinny Muscarella, Jose Zavalza, Eduardo Alves). Cibola grad Javier Quiroz plays in the Coyotes' midfield, who will have to avoid overlooking the Matadors and getting hyped for next week's game against Yavapai.
