Scorpions can't get big hit in loss to Cats
Comments 0 | Recommend 0EDMONTON, Alberta - New half, same results for Scorpions. Yuma lost its first game after the All-Star break, losing 7-3 to Edmonton for its sixth loss in seven games against foes from Canada.
Mike Esposito five runs, four earned, in five innings to take the loss for the Scorpions, who play the Cracker Cats again tonight.
Yuma had 12 hits in the loss, but stranded 13 runners on base. A.J. Valentine alone left five on base in an 0-for-5 performance. Maikel Jova also went 0-for-5.
Rich Janeway, Henry Calderon, Hector Bernal, Pete Farina and Ryan Barba had two hits each for the Scorpions.
Eric Van Slyke gave up 10 hits for the Cracker Cats while striking out five in seven innings for the win.
Edmonton scored one in the second and three in the third to open a 4-0 lead before adding another run in the fifth. Yuma broke through on a fielders choice by Barba that scored All-Star Jeremy Cleveland.
But the Cracker Cats broke the game open with two in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-1 lead. Yuma added solo runs in the seventh and eighth to bring the game to its final.
The second game of the three-game series is tonight, with the conclusion Sunday before the Scorpions travel to Calgary to take on GBL power Flames.
