LOCAL GLANCE (Feb. 21): Prep soccer, JUCO basketball, horseshoes, golf

Kofa dominated the regular season, and it showed on the Gila Valley All-Region Girls Soccer Coaches' Team, released Wednesday.

Nicole Hartman was the Player of the Year, one of six Kings on the first team. Fellow defender Bernice Peralta made the team along with forward Cynthia Samaniego, midfielders Leticia Casillas and Abigail Rosales and goalie Danielle Torres.

Cibola midfielders Andrea Bedoya and Karina Cain and defender Chelsea Perez made the first team, as did Yuma High forward Daisy Rodriguez and midfielder Eri Caro. Rounding out the first team were Gila Ridge forward Sheridan Smith and defender Diana Contreras.

Members of the second team were Mackenzi Michels, Cibola, forward; Dania Gomez, Kofa, forward; Amanda Martinez, Yuma High, midfielder; Asia Chavez, Gila Ridge, midfielder; Brianna Gonzalez, Kofa, midfielder; Jennifer Flores, Kofa, midfielder; Jodi Carlson, Gila Ridge, midfielder; Kimberly Uriarte, Kofa, defender; Hannah Martinez, Yuma High, defender; Maritza Garcia, Kofa, defender; Daniela Barajas, Cibola, defender; Kellie Ouellette, Gila Ridge, defender; and Christena Taylor, Cibola, goalie.

Perez named

ACCAC player of week

In the second-to-last week of his regular season career at Arizona Western, center Carlos Perez was named the Arizona Community College Division I Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Perez average 17.5 points and five rebounds in the two games, both Matador victories, including a career-high 20 points against Phoenix College and 6-foot-11 center Patric Massey.

The Matadors finish the regular season Friday at Mesa, with a chance to finish as the first, second or third seed in the NJCAA Region I Division I playoffs.

Wallace named women's player of week

Arizona Western center Samantha Wallace earned her second Arizona Community College Division I Player of the Week award on Wednesday.

Wallace averaged 27.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and two blocks while shooting 60 percent. She matched a career high with 27 points in a 63-56 win against Cochise, then broke that record with 28 in a loss at Phoenix College.

The regular season ends Friday in Mesa, with the Matadors having a chance to finish as the second or third seed in the NJCAA Region I Division I playoffs.

HORSESHOES

Tournament upcoming

The Yuma Horseshoes Pitching Association will hold its Windup Tournament March 16 at Kennedy Park.

Sign-in is at 9:30 a.m., with the tournament running from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Registration is $20, with all of the money going to the top three finishers. Only sanctioned players may compete.

GOLF

AWC booster club tourney March 22

The Matador Athletic Association will hold its annual golf tournament March 22 at The Links at Coyote Wash in Wellton.

Registration for a single player is $100, and sponsorships range from $150 to $700.

Mulligans and skins are available, and a hole-in-one will win a chance at a car courtesy of Alexander Auto Center. Food and beverages will be complimentary on the course, and a free dinner and reception will follow the tournament with food and prizes.
