LOCAL GLANCE (Jan. 29): Prep Girls Soccer, Prep Boys Basketball, Prep Girls Basketball
For the first time in five playoff trips under head coach Jesus Quintana, the Yuma Catholic girls soccer team lost in the first round of the AIA playoffs.
The Shamrocks lost 1-0 to Scottsdale Prep Tuesday in a Division III first-round game.
“We had some confidence coming in,” Quintana said. “We'd been doing really well this time around and we have a lot of experience, especially with our four seniors. But we were slow starting the game today. I think nerves had a lot to do with it.”
The Shamrocks missed the playoffs last year but made it the previous four years. Quintana said midfielder Morgan Frank and defender Krysta Aitken had big games for YC, which gave up a goal in the 30th minute off a corner kick.
“It was a little disappointing but we'll get over it,” Quintana said. “I'm very proud of the girls.”
PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL
Yuma High gets first win
The Yuma High girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season, topping San Pasqual 43-31 on Tuesday.
Michelle Watson had 10 points for the Criminals, while Janeana Kosterlistzky had 14 to lead the team.
“I'm excited we're coming around,” coach Nate Jurgens said. “We played one of our best games last Friday (a 50-47 loss to Lake Havasu) and we hope to make it two in a row on Friday (closing the year against Mohave).”
The Warriors lost Ceara Ingraham to a concussion in the third quarter. She was taken to the hospital for observation after taking an elbow to the head, said Warrior coach Patricia Malvido. She added that Warriors were leading when Ingraham, one of the team's top two players, left the game late in the third.
Antelope falls to Estrella Foothills
Samantha Twist led the Rams with nine points in their 62-15 loss to Estrella Foothills Tuesday night.
The positive for the Rams was they out-rebounded the Wolves.
“When you have a bunch of 5-foot-5, 5-foot-3 girls, that's' a great thing,” said coach James Jones. “That means they're starting to get more aggressive, which is what we were lacking all season, so good things are coming at the end here.”
PREP BOYS BASKETBALL
Cibola rolls Gila Ridge
Jordan Mitchell scored 24 points to lead Cibola to a 77-54 win over Gila Ridge.
Mitchell also had five assists and six steals. Steven Loucks had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Brett Boyer added 11 points and four assists.
Marcus Weeks took advantage of Cibola's foul trouble to score 17 for the Hawks. Teammate Parker Rodriguez added 12.
The Hawks trailed 28-7 after the first quarter.
Crims top San Luis
Cedric Rash scored 16 to lead Yuma High to a 66-47 win over San Luis on Tuesday.
Octavio Rios scored 15, Alex Juarez 11 and Brenden Young 11 for the Criminals.
Estrella Foothills beats Antelope
Estrella Foothills defeated Antelope 72-28 Tuesday night.
Beto Castro led the Rams with nine points, Fernando Yanez had eight and Ramon Alcala had five.
“Our guys played as hard as they possibly could,” said coach Lance Wagner. “They're a very talented team. They have a very deep bench, they're a good squad.”
