ON DECK: Rumors of NFL rule changes not welcome

Did you see where the National Football League is talking about making the playing field as wide as those used in the Canadian Football League?

Did you also see where the NFL is talking about a “Super Bowl Saturday”?

The thinking about the wider field is it will spread out the players more and reduce the number of injuries.

Dear NFL. This is football. It's a contact sport. If you are a football player, you knew what you were getting yourself into when you signed up to play the game, and that huge contract.

At this rate, let's eliminate tackling and contact all together and starting using flags.

And Super Bowl Saturday? It's supposed to be the safety valve for the biggest game of the year being played outdoors in 2014, Super Bowl XLVIII, in East Rutherford, N.J., in case there is a snow storm on Sunday. Hmmm, it seems to me if it's storming on Sunday, there's a pretty good chance it's going to be storming on Saturday, too.
