ON DECK: One minor flaw with baseball playoff
Far be it from me to spend 150 words about a minor technical quibble about the MLB playoffs, but I have a minor technical quibble about the MLB playoffs.
As if a best-of-five series wasn't bad enough, the 2-3 format the games are played in is just awful. And unfair to the team with the better record.
The series is designed to put the team with the better record in a 2-0 hole before playing their first home game. Oakland has fallen prey to this, losing the first two games in Detroit and now needing to win three straight at home to advance.
I could understand using this format before air travel made the trip from Oakland to Detroit six hours.
But there's no reason they can't use the more common 2-2-1 format.
With so much thought going into creating this exciting new playoff format (not sarcasm; I really enjoy the way this played out this year) it's a shame to see an archaic structure take some of the fairness out of it.
