PREP BASEBALL
YC routs Tonopah
Matt Koppinger had three hits and Wade McBride added a home run as Yuma Catholic won at Tonopah on Tuesday 12-3.
Koppinger and McBride each drove in two runs, while Julian Higuera hit two triples and drove in three runs.
Brandon Evans (3-1) picked up the win for the Shamrocks (9-5 overall, 5-2 AIA), allowing two earned runs in seven innings, striking out eight and walking four.
PREP BOYS TENNIS
Kings top San Luis
Eduardo Ornellas recorded a pivotal win for Kofa on Tuesday, coming back from a first-set loss for a 0-6, 6-2 10-4 win a No. 6, helping the Kings win 5-4 against the Sidewinders.
Ryan Thornburg (6-1, 6-2) and Vitor Malagutti (6-1, 6-3) also picked up single wins for the Kings (6-5 overall, 5-3 GVR), while Thornburg and Greg Hazen (8-2) and Malagutti and Kylar Miranda (8-1) picked up doubles wins.
For the Sidewinders (7-3, 4-3), Alonso Gonzalez (6-1, 6-2), Eduardo Mendez (6-0, 6-4) and Ismael Santos (5-2, 6-1) won at singles. Santos and Abraham Gonzalez (8-2) won at doubles.
PREP GIRLS TENNIS
San Luis edges Kofa
The Sidewinders girls tennis team dealt Kofa its first Gila Valley Region loss on Tuesday with a slim 5-4 victory. The afternoon was decided in the No. 2 doubles match, when Krystal Rodriguez and Jennifer Curiel claimed an 8-1 victory.
Mirka Jenikova topped Rodriguez in the No. 1 singles match by a 6-1, 6-1 margin, but San Luis No. 2 Cristina Piceno (6-3, 7-6) and No. 4 Auri Diaz (5-7, 7-6, 10-4) won their respective singles matches.
San Luis moved to 7-3 AIA, 5-2 Gila Valley Region with the win, while Kofa fell to 8-3, 6-1.
Cibola sweeps Gila Ridge
The Cibola girls tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory at Gila Ridge on Tuesday.
No. 1 Ashreetha Murugesan (6-3, 7-5), No. 2 Stephanie Ramirez (6-2, 6-4) and No. 3 Kassandra Rodriguez (6-1, 7-5) each won their respective singles matches for the Raiders, while Ramirez and Rodriguez teamed to claim an 8-0 victory in the No. 1 doubles match.
Cibola is now 7-2 AIA, 2-2 Gila Valley Region, as the Hawks fall to 3-8 AIA, 1-6 GVR.
