PREP GOLF

YC sets record in opener

The Yuma Catholic golf team found a heck of a way to follow up a state championship: set a school record.

The Shamrocks shot a 5-under-par 139 — both marks school lows — en route to a win in their opening three-way Monday at Desert Hills.

Antelope shot a 203 and Parker a 209.

The Shamrocks swept the top five spots: Joey Pickels (5-under 31), Grady Bourguignon (35), Max Coffeen (35), Kody Boyd (38) and Zach Estes (44).

“It was an incredible way to start the year,” YC coach Bob Anderson said. “We're coming off a state championship and then we accomplish this. If anything, Max is even better than last year, and what Joey did today — it goes without saying how incredible his round was.”

The next two spots belonged to Antelope golfers: Tyler Johnson's 46 put him in sixth, while teammate Skyler Salcido shot a 47.

PREP SOFTBALL

Pierson powers Cibola sweep

Cibola starting pitcher Jackie Pierson had a rough first inning in a doubleheader Monday. After that, everything got way better.

Pierson was perfect in the last six innings against Lake Havasu in a 2-1 Raider win, then hit a double and a grand slam in the sixth inning of the nightcap, a 17-5 Cibola win.

Pierson walked two and gave up a hit in the first inning of the opener then retired 18 straight. The Raiders took the lead in the third on a two-out single by Bethany Olea that scored Hannah Lackey.

The Raiders had 19 hits in the second game. Gracie Villa and Lezlie Morris each went 3 for 4. Morris picked up the win.

PREP BASEBALL

Shamrocks fall in extras

Yuma Catholic forced extra innings in dramatic fashion in its first game of the season but couldn't come up with a win and fell 10-6 in eight innings to River Valley on Monday.

Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, senior catcher Wade McBride hit a two-out, two-run home run to tie it. But Division III powerhouse River Valley responded by scoring four runs in the top of the eighth.

Brady Sorenson went 4 for 4 with an RBI, and Zach Boehler went 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBIs for the Shamrocks.

“It's excellent to play this kind of competition,” Shamrock coach Curt Foppe said of River Valley, which is ranked No. 1 at Division III. “We fought back and had a shot at the end.”

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Zamora makes 2nd team all-section

Yuma Catholic guard Makena Zamora was named to the Division I Section IV second team on Monday.

The junior averaged 11.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.3 steals a game for the Shamrocks.
