Matadors swept by Gauchos

JUCO BASEBALL

Arizona Western dropped a pair of close non-conference games at Scottsdale on Saturday.

The Matadors (6-3) lost 2-0 in the opener and fell 5-4 in nine innings to the Artichokes.

Kahana Neal (2-1) pitched a solid game in the opener, allowing six hits and walking one in the losing effort. Colton Thompson (3-0) dominated on the mound for Scottsdale, pitching a complete game allowing only two hits and striking out five.

In Game 2, Arizona Western had a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning but left the bases loaded — which turned out to be costly when the Artichokes responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Matadors forced the game into extra innings with a run in the seventh. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Scottsdale (8-2) scored the winning run when Connor Sabanosh came home on a passed ball with nobody out.

“I don't think we played to the level that we're capable of playing today,” Arizona Western coach Drew Keehn said.

The Artichokes will come to town and play a double-header at Kammann Field starting at noon Tuesday.
