ON DECK: Too many El Toro trophies
I just have one little nit pick with the El Toro Bowl.
It was a great game, and the Caballeros de Yuma and all associated with the game did a great job.
But I do not like that the game had four — count ‘em, four — MVPs. That reeks of a politically correct, everybody-gets-a-trophy mentality that goes against competitive spirit.
Each school had two MVPs, an offensive and a defensive. And there was no game MVP, so all four are on equal footing. It's a shame Tanner McEvoy can't call himself the El Toro Bowl MVP.
I can understand wanting to reward a team for travelling out here, but why not name the award after a famous Caballero or something — the Bob Smith Competitor Award (I wish I knew enough of Yuma history to not use a made-up name) — for the runners-up? And why not give a game MVP for the winning team?
This way, you spread the wealth around a little, still have a bona fide MVP and shine a light on Yuma history.
