LOCAL GLANCE Dec. 3: Prep soccer, basketball, JUCO football
Freshman Karla Navarro scored three goals Monday as Yuma Catholic topped Yuma High 6-4 in a soccer shootout at Doan Field.
Tied 4-4, Aryza Olague scored the game winner off a rebound with 11 minutes left. Yuma High had tied the game in the 60th minute.
The Shamrocks (2-1) scored the first two goals and led 3-1, but the Criminals scored twice to send the game into halftime tied.
Morgan Frank and Jocelyn Higuera added goals for Yuma Catholic.
“There was a lot of excitement,” YC coach Jesus Quintana said. “The players were running up and down the field all game. There was a lot of action and there were a lot of shots.”
JUCO FOOTBALL
AWC finishes seventh
The Arizona Western football team shot up to No. 7 in the final NJCAA poll released Monday.
The Matadors beat Nassau 42-37 on Saturday in the El Toro Bowl, knocking the Lions from sixth to 11th. The Matadors entered the game 12th.
Iowa Western, the only undefeated team, finished first after beating No. 2 Butler in the championship game.
PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL
Kofa dispatches Yuma High
Kofa's offense proved too much Monday in a 73-20 win over Yuma High.
Joceyln Castaneda scored 19 while Adly Wiley added 16 for the Kings.
YOUTH BASKETBALL
Wildcats beat Blue Devils
The Wildcats won a rec league basketball game Monday against the Blue Devils 41-26.
Marcos Tagaban scored 19 while Jordan Rojano added 13 for the Wildcats (6-4).
