ON DECK: Fantastic end to March Madness
In the iconic comedy “Airplane!” Lloyd Bridges' character Steve McCroskey said, “Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.”
Well, on Monday, it looked like Yuma picked the right day to have little going on as far as local sports.
With the only game being Yuma High softball's win over San Luis, it allowed me to keep close attention in one of the better NCAA Division I men's basketball championship games in recent memory. No, it didn't have a potential game-winning half-court heave nearly miss at the buzzer like the Butler/Duke game, but as far as a beginning-to-end game, Monday's game was certainly up there.
It feels like the game was the final drop of an exciting roller coaster, which would be called March Madness in bright, neon-colored light bulbs — sorry, I went to the fair on Friday.
The college basketball tournament is the best playoff of any sport at any level and it's nice to get a championship worthy of its excitement.
