Gila Ridge girls, VanDeberg, two Criminals heading to state
The Gila Ridge girls cross country took third in the AIA Division II Section I meet at Skunk Creek on Saturday.
Madison Haynes (20:46) finished in first place for the Hawks, with Melia Harman (22:25) taking 12th with Camille Ochoa (22:26) right behind her for 13th place.
Yuma High had two runners qualify — Filomeno Munoz (18:49.80, 20th) for the boys and Gabby Ruiz (21:46.57, seventh) for the girls.
“She's been working really hard and she obviously really wanted it,” Gila Ridge coach Laurel Jordan said about Haynes.
On the boys side, junior Jonathan VanDeberg (17:46) finished in seventh place — good enough for him to get an invitation to the state meet. Lance McBride (19:00) finished in 26th place — a mere half-second behind the 25th place finisher, which would have earned him a spot at the state meet, as well.
The AIA Division II state meet is on Saturday at Cave Creek Golf Course.
