Arizona Western midfielder and San Luis grad Erik Luzanilla became the first Matador since 2009 to earn a NJCAA First Team All-American nod for soccer.

Luzanilla was just one of two Arizona Community College Athletic Conference players on the first team and was the ACCAC Player of the Year.

His numbers weren't the flashiest — he was fourth in the team with seven goals and tied for sixth with four assists.

“Erik Luzanilla is a great player, the captain of our team, and now a first team All-American,” said AWC coach Kenny Dale. “To put that in perspective, apply the following numbers — there are 547 NJCAA colleges that sponsor men's soccer. Each team averages 20 players. That's over 10,000 soccer players at this level. Out of those 10,000, Erik Luzanilla is among the top 11. This is big news. We are all very proud of Erik's accomplishment and look forward to following his career as he moves beyond Yuma to greater achievements down the road.”

Watkins honorable mention All-American

Arizona Western sophomore Amanda Watkins earned honorable mention for the NJCAA All-American Team.

Watkins led the Matadors with a .334 hitting percentage and was fourth on the team in kills. Her 54 solo blocks were ninth in the country.

“I'm very proud of Amanda, since she had another outstanding season,” coach Jason Smith said. “We had a very talented team this year, and she was still our go-to hitter. The ‘side out' numbers for the entire team always showed that Amanda being in the front row was the most important thing we had. But even more than that, Amanda's on track to graduate, has some big schools recruiting her, and she's just carrying on the tradition of a non-qualifier coming in here, and doing her job both as a volleyball player and a student-athlete, and we're very proud of her.”

Avila's four goals lifts Cibola

Ernesto Avila scored four goals as Cibola Lake Havasu 9-0 on Tuesday.

Francisco Urenda added two goals for the Raiders who travel to Kofa for a 6 p.m. game Thursday.

Antelope falls to

Estrella Foothills

Antelope surrendered two goals in the first 10 minutes and never recovered in their 5-3 loss to Estrella Foothills Tuesday.

“We started out pretty shaky,” said Antelope head coach Alfonso Perez. “Their style of play is a really high-pressure defense and our guys just got flustered a little bit in the beginning. Once we settled down we played well, especially in the second half.”

Cesar Mesa had two goals in the first half for the Rams, and Carlos Malbonaeo had one in the second half.

Kofa tops Gila Ridge

Marbin Garcia scored the go-ahead goal in the second half on a penalty kick as Kofa beat Gila Ridge 3-1 on Tuesday.

Fabian Sanchez opened the scoring in the 27th minute before the Hawks tied it before halftime.

Kofa got an insurance goal from Frank Mallek, assisted by goalkeeper Assante Nicewander.

Cibola routs Lake Havasu

Jizzel Escalante led Cibola with a hat trick in their 8-1 victory over Lake Havasu Tuesday.

Escalante opened up the scoring with her first goal in the 15th minute. The Raiders went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

“We made some adjustments after the first half,” said Cibola head coach Joel Ibarra. “We made our corrections and it came through.”

Cibola piled on in the second half, scoring six goals including two from Karina Cain, one from Andi Bedoya and two from freshman Mackenzi Michels, who has five goals in the Raiders' last three games.

After a slow start offensively, Cibola has scored 14 goals in their last two games.

“We've been working a lot on finishing,” Ibarra said. “It's paid off. We still have to work on some stuff, but the work and dedication the girls are putting in is showing.”

Kofa blows out Gila Ridge

After a 25-minute stalemate to begin the match, Kofa scored nine times in a shutout win over Gila Ridge.

“They were battling and pushing us and we were able to break through with a goal and then it seemed like we got two quick ones and it opened up from there,” said Kofa head coach Marisela Velasquez.

Six different Kings scored Tuesday, including two goals apiece from Kimberly Uriate, Cynthia Samaniego and Dania Gomez and one goal apiece from Abigail Rosales, Leticia Casillas and Clarisa Garcia. Rosales and Casillas each had three assists.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Pistone powers YC win

Matt Pistone scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Yuma Catholic's 62-48 win over Gila Bend on Tuesday.

“They played good and shot the ball real well,” YC coach Brooks Neumann said. “We just won by pounding the ball inside to Matt. That made the difference in the game.”

Carter Rodriguez added 14 points, while Troy Mitchell had 12.

Neumann said the Shamrocks made 1 of 16 3-point shots while Gila Bend made nine of theirs.

Dixon scores 29

for Yuma High

Brian Dixon scored 29 in a losing effort for Yuma High on Tuesday against Imperial, 72-65.

Sedric Rash scored 14 and Octavio Rios added 10.

The Criminals led by four after the first quarter but trailed by seven at halftime. They never got closer than five in the fourth quarter.

San Pasqual defeats Antelope

Beto Castro led the Rams with 16 points in their 47-44 loss to San Pasqual Tuesday.

Fernando Yanez and Bostin Mercer each had eight points for the Rams.

Cibola tops Gila Ridge

Gila Ridge fell to Cibola 66-48 on Tuesday.

No stats were available from the game.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

YC roars past Gila Bend

Madison Brazeel scored 20 points and dished out 10 assists in Yuma Catholic's 54-25 win over Gila Bend on Tuesday.

Stephanie VanderVoort added 10 points and nine rebounds, while Mark Terkelsen added nine points and eight rebounds.

Cibola beats Gila Ridge

The Raider defense was lights out in the team's 53-16 win over Gila Ridge Tuesday, but Cibola head coach Justin Hager said there's room for improvement.

“We had a really good defensive effort and were consistent all four quarters, but we have a long ways to go yet,” Hager said.

Hager listed rebounding, offensive efficiency and ball security as things the Raiders need to work on.

Alexis Evans had eight points and eight rebounds while Malacah Jackson led the scoring with 13 points.

San Pasqual rolls past Antelope

Amelda Maynes scored eight points, but Antelope still fell 43-22 to San Pasqual on Tuesday.

Shanna Skousen added six points and nine rebounds for the Rams.
