Matador soccer beats Gateway; football drops to No. 3 in NJCAA

AWC shuts out GateWay

Francisco Ramirez scored twice as the Arizona Western soccer team topped GateWay 4-0 Tuesday in Phoenix.

The Matadors (11-3 overall and Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) outshot the Geckos (3-11 overall and ACCAC) 25-3. AWC goalie Oscar Hernandez did not have to make a save in the game.

Mario Soto also had a goal for the Matadors. Their final goal came on an own goal.

“The game was a great challenge for us: a defensively motivated opponent with the potential for frustration,” Matador coach Kenny Dale said. “We stuck together, stayed after it, and got it done.”

Matadors drop to No. 3

Even after beating Eastern Arizona 20-6 on Saturday, the Arizona Matadors dropped a spot to No. 3 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Conference football poll.

The Matadors (5-0) are now behind No. 1 Iowa Western Community College (5-0) and No. 2 Butler (Kan.) Community College (6-0). Arizona Western travels to Phoenix College at 7 p.m. Saturday.
